Moritz Stein mit seiner Frau

Fig.: Moritz Stein and his wife Lilly. Detail of a photo taken in the thirties on the occasion of a trip of Jews from Horst to Hohensyburg.

Moritz Stein owned a house in Markenstrasse 29 in Gelsenkirchen-Horst where on the ground floor he had a shoe shop. He was married to Lilly Stein, née Bein who was born in Oberhausen on 23rd July, 1872. From 1932 onwards he was one of the councils of the Jewish religious community of the synagogue of Horst. He died in Horst in October, 1939. The couple Moritz Stein had two children, Bernhard, born in Rheydt on 21st of November, 1902 and Marianne, who was born in Mönchengladbach on 12th August, 1905. Whereas Bernhard moved to Herne as early as on 30th June, 1925, Marianne stayed in Gelsenkirchen. There are no traces of Bernhard after his removal to Herne. In 1928 Marianne married Iwan Süsskind, born in Celle on 22nd March, 1898. The couple had a daughter, Charlotte, born in Gelsenkirchen-Horst on 24th March, 1929. Following the Gelsenkirchen city directory of the year 1939, family Süsskind lived in Markenstrasse 29 in Gelsenkirchen-Horst.

On 27th January, 1942 the family was forcibly displaced from Gelsenkirchen to Riga. As per instructions of the SiPo (safety police) Kauen, Iwan Süsskind was then transported from Riga to Stutthof. His arrival there was registered on 19th July, 1944 (prisoner number 49681in the Stutthof concentration camp). From there he went on the transport to Dachau on 13th August, 1944, arrival in Dachau cc on 19th July, 1944. From there he was sent to the satellite camp Mühldorf/Inn. Iwan Süsskind was freed in May 1945. On 26th August, 1945 he was registered in the DP camp Bamberg. On 8th November, 1948 he emigrated on board of the „USS General Omar Bundy“ leaving from Bremerhaven heading for the US.

On 19th of July, 1944, Marianne and Charlotte Süsskind were also forcibly displaced from Riga to Stutthof as per instructions of the SiPo Kauen. Marianne was registered as prisoner number 48915, Charlotte got the number 48914 in Stutthof. Marianne died on 08th December 1944, Charlotte on 27th December, 1944 – both in the concentration camp of Stutthof. According entries are to be found in the prisoner registration, in the prisoner files and transport lists of the museum in Stutthof.

As per a list of the Jewish religious community dating back to 1946 that was compiled on the basis of sur- vivors, Marianne and Charlotte were allegedly seen in camp Precu (Reichsbahn) in Riga and were mur- dered in one of the „Aktionen“ (purges or selections) of SS doctor Krebsbach in summer 1944 in the forests around Riga. The written indications in the records of the Stutthof museum prove that this is not true. All donnations relating to the „Stolpersteine“ in memory of Iwan, Marianne and Charlotte Süsskind were taken by Werner R. Süsskind.
